Background and experience:
Centre for Performing Arts and Education Theatre Pi Skopje is an independent art and theatre registered as a non-governmental and nonprofit organization formed in North Macedonia by free association of citizens, for the sake of achievement alignment and alignment of their interests and for the purpose of carrying out activities and activities in order to open up new spaces for free creative expression and social impact in the field of performing arts through the discovery of new approaches, methods, expressive forms and education.
We are organizing social cultural actions and projects for the different, disenfranchised, marginalised. Supporting people with intellectual disabilities to take part in cultural and social research project
Pi Theater is the only artistic organization in North Macedonia that works for inclusion on a professional level with people with intellectual disabilities and people with typical development. The only theater in the Balkans that for the past 15 years has been implementing year-round programs and campaigns for the inclusion of people with disabilities and with typical development in cultural and social life.
-Independent theatre production realized through experimental methods (workshops, theatre laboratories, theatre and performing live music workshops, creative campaign)
-Organization of workshops on various aspects of performing arts for professionals, persons with special needs, students of art academies and amateurs.
-Organization of public debates on topics in the field of the treatment of performing arts.
-Constant monitoring of European and international events in theatre and other performing arts. Exchange of experiences through participation in domestic and international meetings, conferences, festivals, etc.
-Fostering and strengthening co-operation between domestic and foreign organisations and institutions that have the same or similar objectives and tasks.
-Development of educational programs in the field of theatre, stage expression and their social impact.
-Organising activities in the direction of cultural affirmation of the Republic of North Macedonia, as well as co-operation with other countries in the region and beyond.
-Organising cultural events that will provide equal access to the cultural goods of all.
Pi Theater is financed for its projects by various sources from its country and abroad, such as: Ministry of Culture and Social Affairs, City of Skopje - Department for Social Child and Health Care, Czech and Polish Embassy in Skopje, European Funds of European House in Skopje and others.
Our organization was founded by Zlatko Mitreski and Makedonka Ilievska, two creators and leaders of Pi who over the years formed and attracted a whole network of educators, artists, psychologists, etc. to Theater Pi.
Briefly present your organisation:
Theatre Pi originally came out from a group of Skopje based profesional artists who were all committed to working inclusively within their particular art form.
Zlatko Mitreski and Makedonka Ilievska, the founder members, then started to experiment with different ways of working in theatre with a variety of artists.
Theatre Pi is working with people with intellectual disabilities, typical and untypical development Our users are between the ages of 14 and 45 with and without theatrical or around-theatre experience. Our users are youth group,older people, drama circles, amateur acting groups... We use multimedia tools that are closely related to theater, music, painting to develop a greater awareness of ourselves and society. Through art to greater inclusion of marginalized groups in social and cultural life.
Workshop sessions resulted in a series of short performances with the aim for disabled artists to have the opportunity to develop their skills while creating a new, accessible form of theatre.
The first full length production ‘The Little Princ’ join long-term members from Day care center for persons with disabilities “PORAKA”/ “MESSAGE, join the company and put their mark on its development.
The first shows used inclusive teams creating theatre to stimulate audiences on different sensory levels.
We experimented interweaving the visual (physical theatre, movement, film) and the aural (song, sound-scaping, poetry and music) using sign language and audio description as an integral part of the performance.
Theatre Pi style developed over the years but has always aimed to give the audience different routes of access to the performance, enabling everyone to have a quality theatrical experience.

Previous projects
2026-In creation "Physics of Joy", Theatre Pi is in the process of developing the latest multimedia concept with which, through mainly theatrical, but also photographic, scenographic, musical and psychological workshops led by educators-professionals in their field, participants with typical and atypical development will travel together through labyrinths to the full process of creating a complete theatrical work.The project is part of the campaign for the inclusion of people with special needs, as well as people with typical and atypical development in culture. The project is financed with funds from Bulgarian Development Assistance.
2025-“Beating boundaries” -Theater Pi with its theatrical performance Beating Boundaries-A Symphony for a Sustainable Future; in which the participants are persons with atypical and typical development. This performance was in Spark festival in Baja Luka. The festival at Dis - Pozoriste mladih Banja Luka. The project is financed with funds from Western Balkans Fund.
2024- “WE, THE PEOPLE” is a multimedia concept in which, through mainly theatrical, but also photographic, scenographic, musical and psychological workshops led by educators-professionals in their field, participants with typical and atypical development went through a complete process of creating a complete theatrical work, informs the "Pi" Theater. The performance is part of the campaign for the inclusion of people with special needs, as well as people with atypical development in culture, which began in January 2023, and ends with a theatrical premiere. The project is financed with funds from the Bulgarian Development Assistance.
2023 - "Far From Us" (Далеку од нас) - Campaign for the inclusion of persons with disabilities. Labyrinth Theatre, photo exhibition, music concert, and a theatrical performance realized with students with disabilities from schools in Gjorche Petrov, typically developing students, persons with disabilities from CPPLIP Poraka Skopje, and professional musicians and actors. The final part of the project was a theatrical performance with the same title, realized at the end of December 2023.

-2022 "Wonders in Alice" Campaign for the inclusion of people with disabilities. An exhibition of photographs and a musical concert as well as a theater performance realized with students with disabilities from schools in Gjorce Petrov, students with typical development, people with disabilities from CPLIP Poraka Skopje and professional musicians and actors. The final part of the project was a theater play with the same title, which was realized at the end of December 2022. This project was supported by the Municipality of Gjorce Petrov, Ministry of Culture - Department of Interdisciplinary Activities, City of Skopje.

- 2021/2 "Nothing scary" Theater performance as the final part of the multimedia campaign "Nothing bothers me". With this performance, Pi Theater won four awards, including the award for best direction and one for complete synergy at the international festival of professional plays for author's theater in the Republic of Bulgaria FAT 2022. As well as the Grand Prix "Vasil Kortoshev" for the best play at the 59th Drama Festival 2022 (DAF) in Kočani, the second prize of the same festival is for researching new means of scenic expression and experiments in the theater.
